As Larry Carlton has shown throughout his incredible, multi-faceted career as a first-call session guitarist and a successful recording artist, the double-cutaway, semi-hollow body ES-335 is the perfect guitar for practically any musical setting. It's as perfect a fit for jazz and fusion as it is for blues and beyond. The Larry Carlton signature model features all the personal specs of the man known around the world as "Mr. 335," from the custom '60s neck profile to the Classic Sunburst finish with single-ply cream binding.

Since the late 1960s, Larry Carlton has appeared on thousands of recordings as a session player, in addition to his work as a solo recording artist which has earned him 18 Grammy nominations to go along with his three Grammy statues. Throughout it all, the main constant in Carlton's wide-ranging career has been his beloved 1968 Gibson ES-335, which he still uses today. The guitar for the man dubbed "Mr. ES-335." Two '57 Classic humbucking pickups and stopbar tailpiece. Schaller M6 tuners and chrome-finished hardware. History From the time his parents put a six-string into his hands at the age of six to his first gig at a supper club in 1962 to his first recorded album in 1968, With A Little Help From My Friends, "Mr. ES-335 has wowed audiences and critics alike with his virtuosity, and his unique bluesy rhythmic melodies and ringing guitar tone. He immediately endeared himself to anyone who was lucky enough to hear his distinctive blend of American jazz, blue, rock and pop guitar, which he developed by studying the inspirational techniques of artists like Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, B.B. King, along with legendary saxophonist John Coltrane and trumpeter Miles Davis. Body and Neck Gibson Custom decided to honor Carlton's legacy in 2004 with the introduction of the Larry Carlton ES-335, which faithfully recreates his renowned six-string semi-hollowbody guitar, thus making it the perfect instrument for any musical setting. This legendary instrument features plain laminated maple top, back, and rims, with single-ply, creme-colored binding around the top and back. The finish has been dubbed the "Carlton Burst" for its resemblance to the faded burst finish on Carlton's original guitar. The standard 24-3/4-inch scale neck features a slim-taper profile, topped with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, pearloid block inlays and single-ply binding along the fingerboard. Hardware A pair of Gibson's legendary '57 Classic pickups deliver all the warm, full tone and balanced response expected from a Gibson humbucker. Other standard appointments include a Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, Schaller M6 tuners and chrome-finished hardware. The Larry Carlton ES-335 from Gibson Custom comes with the standard Gibson Custom case and certificate of authenticity. Nitrocellulose Finish Applying a nitrocellulose finish to any Gibson guitar is one of the most labor-intensive elements of the guitar-making process. A properly applied nitro finish requires extensive man hours, several evenly applied coats, and an exorbitant amount of drying time. But this fact has never swayed Gibson into changing this time-tested method, employed ever since the first Gibson guitar was swathed with lacquer back in 1894. Why? For starters, a nitro finish dries to a much thinner coat than a polyurethane finish, which means there is less interference with the natural vibration of the instrument, allowing for a purer tone. A nitro finish is also a softer finish, which makes it easily repairable. You can touch up a scratch or ding on a nitro finish, but you can't do the same on a poly finish. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous in nature, and actually gets thinner over time. It does not "seal" wood in an airtight shell--as a poly finish does--and allows the wood to breathe and age properly. All VOS (Vintage Original Spec) series guitars will use a proprietary process that includes unique steps for staining, wet-sanding, and hand-rubbing; subsequently the guitars reflect what a well-cared for 40-year-old guitar looks like. The result is a remarkable patina that will delight even the most discriminating enthusiast.

The Gibson ES-335 Reissue Electric Guitar is about the most versatile guitar you can have. Classic semi-hollowbody design and dual '57 Gibson humbuckers combine to produce everything from full-bodied growls to singing sustain. The ES-335 also features a thin tapered 1960s neck and rosewood fingerboard (24-3/4" scale), body/neck binding, nickel-plated hardware with Grover heads, Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece, separate volume and tone controls, and a 3-way switch.

History speaks for itself. The ES-335 is one of the most important guitars of all time. Right from its introduction in 1958 as the world's first semi-hollowbody electric guitar it has been a mainstay of players eager to balance the gorgeous, round, mellow tones perfect for jazz and blues with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody. Countless music legends have immortalized Gibson's ES-335. Two '57 Classic humbucking pickups and stopbar tailpiece. Grover kidney-shaped tuners. Today the Gibson Custom Shop creates exacting duplicates of the ES-335 as it first left the Kalamazoo plant in 1958. That year just 267 were built, but the original vintage 335s grew steadily in popularity, peaking in 1967 thanks largely to Eric Clapton's high-profile use of a cherry ES-335 in the band Cream. Body and Finishes The Custom Shop ES-335 is available with many finish options, reflecting the color choices that have evolved over the model's 50-year history. In Satin finish, trans black and cherry colors are available, with a plain maple top, back, and rims. Ebony is available only in plain maple. With the figured maple top, back, and rims option, cherry, tri-burst, antique natural, light burst, and vintage sunburst colors are available. Wine red, trans brown, Beale Street Blue, and cinnamon burst finishes are also available in limited quantities, along with gold hardware, for figured and for plain maple models. Regardless of color, the ES-335 retains its classic proportions: 16 1/2-inches wide, 20-inches long, and 1 3/4-inches deep. The neck is one-piece mahogany beneath a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays and a single-ply binding. Additionally, there's single-ply binding on the top and back. Hardware All hardware is nickel, and there's a classic ABR-1 bridge with a lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece. Neck length is 24 3/4 inches with a 1 11/16-inch nut width. Satin finish models have vintage style tulip shaped tuners, while figured and plain tops come with Grover kidney-shaped tuners. All Custom Shop ES-335s have powerful '57 Classic humbucking pickups, two volume pots, two tone pots, and a three-way pickup selector switch. They are strung with Gibson Brite Wire .010 strings and come safely nestled in a black levant case. Famous Players Spanning numerous decades, the ES-335 has been in the hands of countless musicians. From Chuck Berry's numerous performances to Alvin Lee's incendiary performance at Woodstock to Police's 2008 tour in NYC, the ES-335 has been the instrument of choice for any players seeking gorgeous, round, mellow tones, tempered with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody electric like the Les Paul. The Gibson ES335 Memphis DOT Plain Gloss Top gives you the resonance of a solid body and the refines looks of a traditional Gibson archtop with the reduced weigt of a thinline. Today's ES335 continues to provide the tone and the look that inspires musicians in blues, rock and jazz. The American Made Memphis Series DOT Reissue features a maple body, a mahogany neck with a rosewood fingerboard, two Gibson 1957 Classic humbuckers and Grover tuners. From Chuck Berry to Larry Carlton, Freddie King to Alvin Lee, the Gibson ES335 has proven to be one of the most popular and adaptable guitars ever created. Touted as the wonder thin body by Gibson when it launched in 1958, the ES335 represented a ground breaking innovation in electric guitars. With its solid maple center block and f hole semi hollowbody design, the ES335 effectively delivers the singing sustain of a solidbody while preserving the tone and richness of a full hollowbody, with no feedback. The Custom Shop has made several changes to more accurately reflect an original ES335, including a period correct center block resulting in ten to fifteen percent weight reduction, a slightly thinner body, and lower binding height. Pickups With its Patent Applied For decal on the baseplate, the 1957 Classic and 1957 Classic Plus are faithful replicas of the famous Gibson humbuckers that helped define the music of the late 1950s. While this timeless beauty gives you a tone that is warm and subtle with full, even response, it doesn't hold back when you need that classic Gibson humbucker crunch! The 1957 Classic features Gibson's special Alnico II magnet, vintage enamel coated wire, nickel plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers and vintage-style, two-conductor, braided wiring.

The Gibson ES-335?

can someone tell me a little about what it is to play one before you go to the store?

I have a few of 335. Are quite heavy, and in general, very big. BUT, are semihollow rather than completely hollow (which means it is approx. 4 inches thinner). The great thing is that over 335 semihollows have a center block that reduces any feedback possible without sacrificing the famous hollow support. Feedback can be a serious problem with totally hollow guitars (on especially if you play safe, saturation, or any type of distortion). The neck has a nice slim taper makes it very easy to play (meaning it is not as thick as a Les Paul, but a little wider than a start.) If you are looking for a new issue, the population of 57 in what actually sound pretty decent, I personally have upgraded to a pair of boutique pickups. Is significantly darker than the beginning, but the music sounds very well balanced (yes, it will cut through the mixture). If I have any advice for you, that is, make sure you have it installed, you will play much better after a good set-up. Have fun, is a great guitarist.

Gibson ES335

Blues guitar legend BB King

He moves slowly now, his body 82 years of age he began to betray him, joint pain and weather endless miles he has traveled throughout life. He steps onto the stage, pulls the strap of the Gibson ES-335 over his shoulder and squinting slightly in the cheering crowd. His face breaks into a wide, humbled, almost embarrassed smile as noise "Good Night" floats your audience. As your left hand moves on the guitar neck and right hand bends and hits the ropes, the years melt away and suddenly finds watching a master craftsman plying his trade. The house is filled with the unmistakable tones of midnight blue to raise the hair on the back of your neck. Half BB King closes his eyes, screws his face, and ... will rest in its proper place, that will take him.

Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a plantation in Mississippi, his youth was as a farm worker. A pastor playing guitar in church sanctified surprised him with his playing when BB was five, but he bought his first guitar until he was 12. Work has a house-boy for $ 15 a month, you save as much as he could (still need a loan from his boss) and bought a red Stella acoustic man on the road. Like many blues guitarists of his time, gave himself guitar lessons with the help of a couple of books and popular recordings of the day. At fifteen years he played in the streets for change in his native Indianola, but later got the itch to move on in search of a musical career, hitchhiking to Memphis in 1946.

After busking and playing in gospel groups in Memphis for a year, King had the opportunity to play on a popular radio radio organized by local harmonica legend Sonny Boy Williamson. From there, he moved to regular concerts in clubs of Beale Street. Shortly thereafter, secured a season BB WDIA in hosting a radio spot, singing blues and playing records in the self-appointed air-Beale Street Blues Boy name, shortening it to BB King. His first recordings were made in 1949, Sam Phillips of Sun Records, but his first success came in December 1951 with its new version of Lowell Fulson's "Three O'Clock Blues." Scored four hits number one R & B between 1951 and 1954, now including his signature "You Upset Me Baby."

In 1955, King had left his program WDIA radio, bought a bus, and embarked on a tour of the country. In 1958, the bus hit a gas truck on a bridge in Texas. Although the king, nor any members of his band were on the bus at the time, the truck driver was killed. It took several years the king to pay debts as result of the accident.

Although the king is still very popular with black audiences, who had not yet released the Chitlin Circuit. This radically changed for the king with the recording of "Live at the Regal", a live recording of a show at Chicago's South Side Blues Club in 1964. This recording is often referred to as one of the best records ever made life.

It was his performance at the Montreaux Jazz Festival 1967, which became BB to a wider audience. During this time, when many British guitarists pay homage to American blues artists, King hit well in the UK landing an opening The Rolling Stones tour in its sixth U.S. tour.

In 1970, King recorded his famous song "The Thrill Is Gone." Immediately recognized the power of the first shrill notes of his voice resonant, friendly is not only a staple of his shows, but also a song that any blues guitarist worth his salt has an obligation to learn.

His most famous band mate has always been "Lucille" guitars named an incident in Twist, Arkansas. During the show, two men started fighting, a kerosene heater was expelled again, and at times framed wood club was on fire. King escaped but ran inside to rescue his beloved guitar, just do it with his life. When King learned that the fight was over a woman named Lucille, King named all of his guitar Lucille to serve as a reminder to never do anything that reckless again. Gibson has issued a special commemorative BB King signature edition of the famous ES-335 with name, of course, Lucille.

King said from the beginning that I wanted to be an ambassador of blues in the world, like Louis Armstrong made with the jazz-and he did just that. Among its distinctive blues guitar licks are elements of rock, jazz and gospel resulting in his unique style. King did not sing nor play chords as you play. King sings in a warm and friendly that deftly combines elements of pain and humor, and when you stop the voice of Lucille picks up the song where King left off, taking in a round robin of the singer and guitarist, call and response in the rich tradition of the Delta.

BB has always been a tireless artist. In his early days as a struggling musician, I used to play up to four tickets per night, making it back to WDIA in time for their turn in the air. His touring schedule is legendary, it is estimated that now in his early eighties, King has played in the neighborhood of twenty thousand concerts in his career and remains the management more than two hundred concerts a year. It is easy to see the time wearing it, seems to speak more in their sample of play these days, but when it comes to King, emotion still there.

It is impossible to know how much longer we will have it all. He has won Grammy awards, has been inducted into the Hall of Fame Blues and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and received several honorary degrees, but still direct ties to the land rich, green Delta and tradition that brought heavy. Do not miss the opportunity Stock seeing blues while you can, go see The King of Blues.
