The militant secularism and the culture of death: Time to join the resistance

If I had to put my cat charming Doobie our travel cage and stop giving to eat until the mewing and crying over and finally died, I would be guilty of a Class 6 felony in Virginia. Under the law, that would be eligible for the "penalty imprisonment of not less than one year nor more than five years ... and a fine of not more than $ 2,500, or both. "However, in Florida, Michael Schiavo, who years ago abandoned his marriage vows with his disabled wife and now lives with and has two children with his girlfriend found a judge who convinced that his late wife Terri would not have wanted to live in the state with disabilities are somehow in this judge was persuaded by "clear and convincing evidence," the highest level civil test in spite of the fact that Terri never wrote a living will or left any evidence of advance directives. And even parents who care her, and believed that Terri would not want to die like he did, the same judge ordered the withdrawal of his death tube feeding Terri-relegated to a slow, tortuous, two weeks by dehydration and starvation. But wait! Florida has a law that should have been applied to this case (but, of course, was not).

It is well known as the "abuse, neglect and exploitation of Elderly and Disabled Adults Act" (see Penal Code Florida sect. 825.102). Below it, is a felony because of "[a] ggravated abuse of [a] ... adults with disabilities, inter alia," [w] illfull Torture [e]. "It is also a felony if one responsible for an incapacitated adult" willfully or through culpable negligence neglects [a] adults with disabilities ... "Or" provide [a] adults with disabilities ... with the care, supervision, and services necessary to maintain ... physical and mental health of adults with disabilities, including but not limited to, food, nutrition ... "Now that Terri is dead, any enforcement or non-violent action moral in their name are arguable. However, his legacy is such that the Church must be enabled to fight for a culture of life prevails over death culture like never before.

(The term "culture of life" was one the late Pope John Paul II entered the lexicon of the world during his amazing 26-year papacy. He will be sorely under both Catholics and Protestants worldwide. His life and ethics of life was commemorated in the next issue of AAC.) For any of a culture life and its attendant law prevail, or one that would send me to jail for killing my cat, while protecting Michael for killing his wife. Unfortunately, I think it is very clear, at this time in America, what will be, because nobody stood up for Terri at the end, everyone gave out and left to die. For many lay people our history cherished constitutional right to life and freedom of religion has become a dedicated effort to building a civic life that is characterized for freedom of religion and culture of life. The hostility towards life and religion and to Christianity in particular-has become one of the causes multifaceted being washed away all references to God and trust in actions based on faith in the public square.

Taking the dubious doctrine of separation of Church and absolute end state, militant secularists have used speech codes (in many of our best college campuses), extreme analogies (comparing George Bush with Hitler), litigation and lawyers radicals (Roe v. Wade, the case of Massachusetts for gay marriage, among a myriad of other cases), and threats and violence (quasi-terrorist antics of the law, even against the Church) to promote their cause and deny any influence of politics based on faith in public forums of our nation. This secular hostility has also served in psychotherapy and mental health care that has been generously described as "the breach of faith. "Compared with 85% of the population who claim to believe in God, as far as two-thirds or more to believe in the Christian faith and values, such numbers are almost reversed when mental health professionals were asked about their beliefs in God, the great majority do not. Undoubtedly, one reason a great many leaders Religious conservatives are skeptical, even hostile to psychology and counseling is that many therapists are unbelievers.

With them Too often agents of disbelief and that counseling and psychotherapy does, either by design or effect, the transfer of securities in the therapist's life customer. This fact alone may be the biggest reason to advocate for a strong Christian orientation in the life of the Church. As recently as 30 years ago Democratic Left were the champions of life, to protect the rights of the poor and weak in society. In 1977, Senator Hubert Humphrey declared maximum that should be a principled policy of all political parties: "The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life of children, the twilight of life, the elderly;. and shadows of life to the sick, the needy and the handicapped "Modern liberalism the embrace of abortion, physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia and penetrating to the elderly and disabled people have completely abandoned this ethic of life. What would wrong for the secular left in America has become the enemy of preservation of life? I think not.

Columnist David Limbaugh, speaking facing the wrath of the current president of Harvard University for his recent controversial statements and the scarcity of women in math and science, held provides that, "This is not only the control of thought, the thought of prison. The left is increasingly intellectually bankrupt and delusional. But the worst, has become boorishly dictatorial, not sparing even potential allies, as Clintonites Lawrence Summers, his infernal wrath, if they dare not disagree only with its dogma, but to express a willingness to consider the ideas of [politically correct thinking] 'code' prohibited. "Similarly, Hugh Hewitt WORLD magazine (April 9, 2005) narrates the left unbridled venom against conservatives and Christians. Paul Krugman and Maureen Dowd strident warning about theocratic tyranny and religious extremists that one day you can start killing liberal politicians, Andrew Sullivan Bill Kristol a brand ally 'of religious radicalism, "the lies of the left seems to know no limits.

Having lost sight of normal, American religious movement in the mark that is dangerous and a legitimate object of hatred, anti-Christian propagandists on the left, in "complete separation of logic or factual support" and put in print hateful vitriol "For no lie is too great, without exaggerating too bold." Hewitt rightly calls it amazing. We also alarming and call it a proper prelude to assemble. Princeton University bioethics Peter Singer is probably the best thinker and most influential advocate of animal culture death, catching up with humans and arguing for widespread euthanasia for people who no longer meet the criteria of rational society of self-awareness and utility. In its recognition by TIME magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people (April 18, 2005), Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania, said of him: "It's easy to demonize singer, 58, since their theory points to findings that some consider morally repugnant, for example, that euthanasia may be the appropriate response to intractable pain of a baby born with a terrible genetic disease.

Those who despise his views can rarely produce a discussion about why it is wrong, just do not like its conclusions. But ethics is about arguments, not moral judgments. "This is not double sense. The ethical argument is, yes, but also ethics rightly based on the capital-T Truth are the arguments of moral persuasion the reason the best ethical principles revealed in Scripture. And from God's revelation, the most powerful claims of holiness (as opposed the dependence of the Culture of Death in the quality) of life one can argue with certainty that goes far beyond mere subjective dislike of cultural values death. Unfortunately, God and his revelation is rejected in full, then Caplan statement might be true, for what reasons can be given, and normal as it can be argued any better? The power and coercion to be in the end, the only instruments left "to persuade" anyone in a postmodern world post-Christian who rejects a truly universal standard. Remember what Jesus said in response to the awkward speculation about marriage in heaven, a claim that could easily applied to this issue as well as the human imagination without a transformed mind: "You are in error because they know the Scriptures, nor the power of God "(Matthew 22:29). And although not claim this truth so blatantly in an argument with a hostile audience, would surely be our covert budget.

It is the open base of all articles and columns in this issue and reasoned knowledge of godly ethics you learn in this and the next issue of the AAC (13-1) will guide you through most practical ethical dilemmas, and arms for many a good ethical debate. To his credit, participate in the debate singer respected and thought Christians must be prepared to discuss these issues with anyone who respects both sides of an argument. With a number increasing secular opposition activist who hate religion and embrace the culture of death, however, there is no rational debate, not 'play-by-the-rules "commitment by which the best ideas win. No, with these people and the culture of death to provide, can only be resistance. Since your goal is to not listen to us, but to crush our freedoms and ideas and the right to speak out-a more effective rule or destroy us, there can be no just war. It's time to recognize the extent and virulence of this hostility, properly assess its corrosive effects on the Church and our country, and join the various efforts to resist. For our part, this "war of ideas" must be and ideas that is dark and deadly than the war on not, those who are expelled. Our resistance must be nonviolent, ethical fought, well-planned and coordinated, with value pursued and persevered with patience. The culture of death should be resisted or act upon us. Take the help of Internet counseing.

Thomas Jefferson once said prophetically, "The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government. "Therefore, unless the good people stand up and fight for good government, which will be overcome by evil government, by the forces of anti-Christian death, decisively, pushing his dark agenda on the nation and the world. I know you see what happens. Have you joined the resistance? Are you fighting for good governance for the forces of "human life and happiness?" If not, is not it time to start? Care at the end of life is just one of the increasingly "issues burning "of bioethics. After two excellent articles well known Christian leaders around another big issue of bio-ethics of research today-with stem cells and their application to medical treatment. A well-reasoned and well argued case of Tony Perkins and David Prentice is followed by the eloquent and passionate defense of Joni Eareckson Tada. Read on and be armed. Ohlschlager George, JD, LCSW, is Senior Editor and writer AACC, Executive Director of the American Board of Christian Counselors and President of the Law of the AACC and Ethics Committee. It maintains a clinic at the national / ethics / forensic consulting and training practices, and teaches at the University Center Freedom Studies and the Department of Family and St. Petersburg Theological Seminary.
