Once upon a time a long time ago, the Sun was looking down from his place in the sky, through the clouds, through the treetops into the forest.  In the middle of all the animals, he saw something dancing.  Was it a wily coyote?  Was it a howling wolf?  Was it a laughing hyena?  No, it was a little princess dancing in the forest.  She was the most wonderful dancer the Sun had ever seen.  The Sun fell in love with her and followed her everywhere she went from his place in the sky.  The people in the kingdom called her Princess Sun.

Princess Sun had a father and he was the king.   He would say:  “Princess Sun, do the dishes.  Princess Sun, wash the floors.  Princess Sun, do the laundry.  Princess Sun, do some more!”  And when Princess Sun went down to the forest to dance with the animals, the King would come down to the edge of the forest and say:  “Princess Sun, come home this instant!”

Usually Princess Sun would listen to her father, but this time, she raised her finger and said:  “No, no, no, no.  No, I don’t want to go.  Can’t you see I’m busy!”

And she was busy, because when Princess Sun played in the forest, she didn’t just talk to the people in the forest.  Who did she talk with?  And when Princess Sun played in the forest, she didn’t just talk to the people and the animals.  Who did she talk with?  And the Sun talked back to her.  What did I say?  (The Sun talked back to her.)  What was that?

Everywhere Princess Sun went that summer, who followed her?  And that made the summer very hot.  When it’s very hot and there is no rain, what happens to the plants?  The farmers who grow the plants were very angry.  They said:  “King, King, our plants are dying.  King, King, our plants are dying.  Is there anything that you can do?  Anything that you can do?”

The King said:  “Of course there is something I can do.  I am the King.  I am the King.  I give the orders.  And people jump!”

“Everybody sit before the King!

“Okay,” said the King.  “There is a problem in the kingdom.  The plants are dying.  Do you know what the plants need to grow?  And where does the water come from?  And where does the rain come from?  And who is the king of the sky (that big yellow circle in the sky)?  And who is greater, me or the Sun?  Who is greater, me or the Sun?  I’ll show you.  I’m going to tell the Sun what to do.

“Sun, Sun, Sun, Sun.  I’m telling you.  Sun, Sun, Sun, Sun.  I’m telling you.  Make it rain.  Make it rain.  I’m telling you.  Make it rain.  Make it rain.  I’m telling you!”

Do you think the Sun listened to the King?  And how do you think the King felt?

The King said:  “Mr. Sun, I don’t think you know who I am!  I am the king.   I am the king.  I give the orders.   And you better listen to me!

Do you think the Sun listened to the King?  And how do you think the King felt?

The King started crying and he saw all the people looking at him.  And he cried some more.  And all the people looked at him.  He felt embarrassed, and he ran to the castle and hid in the basement, which is called the dungeon.  The King only let one person in the whole world visit him in the dungeon, and that was Princess Sun.

When Princess Sun visited the King in the dungeon, she said:  “Daddy, when I play in the forest I don’t just talk to the people in the forest, I talk to the animals.   And when I play in the forest, I don’t just talk to the people and the animals, I talk to the Sun.   And the Sun talks back to me.”

“What did you say?” growled the King.

“The Sun talks back to me.”

“What did you say?” bellowed the King.

“The Sun talks back to me.”

“How could that be?” asked the King.  “I am a great King and the Sun doesn’t talk to me.  You are just a little princess.  How could the Sun talk to you if it never talks to me?”

“Maybe you aren’t listening,” said the Princess.

That night, in her bedroom, Princess Sun could not see the Sun.  But she said:  “Sun, the farmers need some water.   Would you please ask the clouds to make it rain?”

“Of course I will,” said the Sun.  “You are my dear Princess.  I love you so much.  I would do anything for you.  But would you do one little thing for me?  Tomorrow morning, when I rise in the sky, would you do a rain dance with all the people in the kingdom?”

And Princess Sun said: “Yes.”

The next morning, The Princess got up and stretched, and said, “Ahhhhhhhhh!”

Then she got dressed.  And ate her breakfast.  And brushed her teeth.  Then she went out on the castle lawn and started to dance.

She started to dance!  She was moving and a-grooving, feeling and a-reeling, rocking and a-rolling, slipping and a-sliding.  Dance!  She started to dance!

And everyone in the kingdom was dancing with her.

“It’ll never work,” said the King.  “It’ll never work.  You better stop dancing.  ‘Cause it’ll never work.”

“Yes it will!” said the people.

“No it won’t.  I am the King and I say no more dancing in my kingdom!”

And the people started to dance.

They started to dance!  They were moving and a-grooving, feeling and a-reeling, rocking and a-rolling, slipping and a-sliding.  Dance!  They started to dance!

“It’ll never work,” said the King.  “It’ll never work.  You better stop dancing.  ‘Cause it’ll never work.”

“Yes it will!” said the people.

“No it won’t.  I am the King and I am making a law.  No more dancing in my kingdom for ever and ever!”

And the people started to dance.

They started to dance!  They were moving and a-grooving, feeling and a-reeling, rocking and a-rolling, slipping and a-sliding.  Dance!  They started to dance!

Down came the rain!  The people stretched out their hands to catch it.  They stuck out their tongues to drink it.  They said, “Ah-yah-yah-yah-yah!”

Then the Sun reached down his big golden hand, and took the hand of the Princess.  He brought her way up into the sky and the Princess became the Moon.  The Sun and The Moon lived happily ever after watching over the kingdom.
